Where’s Walternate?

Oct 1, 2011 | 11 comments

I’ve always said the writers at Fringe are pretty clever.  From Easter eggs to plot twists to outright crazy.  They know their stuff and they always seem to have a plan.  Now I’m thinking they’ve thrown us their best curve ball of all.

“Where is Peter Bishop?”

Ha, to heck with where’s Peter, where’s Walternate? Throughout the summer and into the fall we have been deluged with the where’s Peter Bishop campaign.  We’ve all been caught up in it.  It’s the question that has been tearing up inter-web, greater media and blogesphere alike.   Don’t get me wrong it is a great campaign but it might be their greatest case of subterfuge yet.  Keep us all chasing Peter but keep Walternate mysteriously off screen.

So why?  What is Walternate up to?  Why haven’t we seen him?  Here are some quick thoughts

  • Walter’s right, he can’t be trusted and he’s working to subvert the uneasy truce.
  • He’s busy building an army of translucent shape-shifters.
  • He’s figured out what the machine is for.
  • Or, he’s figured out what the machine is for and who is supposed to operate it.

Aha!  While we have all seen flashes of Peter in Walters presence we haven’t seen him manifest himself to Walternate.   Why would he you say?  It’s the quantum entanglement of love that binds Walter and Peter.  What about the quantum entanglement of the biological father and son?  Just because Peter is calling out to Walter doesn’t mean Walternate can’t sense this.  He may even be able sense what Walter is going through with an entanglement with him and he has a head start on everyone!

So what are your theories, why haven’t we seen Walternate?  Are we on to something or do I just get up too early in the morning thinking about Fringe?

Sound off!

    The shapeshifters are ZFT.

I had forgotten about ZFT Hemo. Hopefully they will resurrect this concept.

Hi Dave! I am curious as well to the whereabouts of Walternate. I had hoped we would at least get a glimpse of him in episode 2, since it was based partly in the red-verse. I guess I will have to be content with the re-emergence of Alter-Broyles (did he always have those pecs? I remember Alter-Broyles as having a more military persona, but I either missed or forgot about his killer upper body. Haha.) Also, is it just me, or does Faux-livia seem smirkier and more smug than usual when she speaks to Olivia? It makes me feel like Walternate and the rest of the red-verse team are up to something. But maybe I’m too paranoid.

Hi there Fringe_Nerd! I have to say I was struck by the physique of Lance Reddick also. The guy must be a workout warrior.

Yes, I think Altlivia is a little snarkier than usual. Maybe it is for the newbies to the show to help them distinguish between the two characters. I’m sure Walternate and his crew are up to something. Come to think of it, we haven’t seen Brandonate either.

There’s nothing wrong with a little paranoia, it fits the show!

Ooohh, I had not thought of Brandonate until you mentioned him. What a creepy dude. I hope to see him, and Walternate, soon.

I hope we see them soon also. They are quite a pair and they probably shouldn’t be left alone together. Brandonate has even a darker streak than Walternate. Let’s see what they cook up.

Ok, so we know Walternate exists because we saw him in the season finale after peter disapearred. I have to assume that Walternate is also seeing flashes of Peter. Maybe Walternate is less evil because Walter never stole peter in the first place. Maybe Walternate is nicer without Peter in the time line.

I’m hoping Walternate does have a sense of what is going on. Like I said above he is the biological Father to Peter. Peter is calling out to Walter and asking for help. I wonder if in the next episode he will try to warn Walter that Walternate is up to something. Perhaps then, Walter will accept the voice of Peter as something good and not something that is haunting him. Then he really will try to help Peter.

As far as Walternate being nicer, I hope not. It would be a shame to de-fang him. Walter seems to think he is the Devil incarnate. I’m assuming both Peters died as children so the two Walters hate each other for reasons such as doing damage to each others universe.

Yes, and we also know that he exists because Walter mentions him in the premiere episode, calling him the Devil and saying that he can’t be trusted.

I’m thinking Walternate knows that he can bring his son back through the machine somehow (maybe he has a prophesy drawing and the over here characters don’t?) and has been trying to work on this behind the scenes without Walter’s knowledge.

I don’t think the writers wanted to show us this because it would give too much away, much like the Olivia-has-been-seeing-Peter-in-her-dreams reveal would have early on.

Since Walter basically killed and kidnapped Walternate’s son and destroyed the universe, he doesn’t want his help on any of it and so he doesn’t know Peter’s been trying to contact Walter or Olivia.

Walternate’s behind the scenes machinations should provide a wonderful thunder clap moment. So I agree it is something the writers have been putting off much like Olivia’s own visions of Peter. Maybe we have seen evidence of his Walternate’s nefarious tendrils but we just haven’t pieced it together yet.

If Walternate has no knowledge of Peter’s efforts to return and or his eventual return can you imagine what his reaction would be when he finds out Walter has Peter again? That’s the stuff of a mid season cliff hanger!
