Season 1’s favor (Nina & Peter)

Nov 11, 2011 | 4 comments

In a recent discussion with @theLOSTpassenger about the character of Nina Sharp, a little flicker of light happened and and idea formed in my mind. This is pure speculation at the moment on my part but there may just be some evidence to support it so here it comes.  In the sixth episode of season one (“The Cure”) Peter strikes a deal with the Viper whom we have come to know as Nina Sharp. This deal isn’t really gone into any detail except Nina tells Peter that for the information she can provide him (information that he needs), he will have to do her a favor when the time comes and there is to be no questions asked.  Later in the episode Olivia questions Peter as to what he had to do in order to get the information from Nina but he simply brushes it off playfully and more or less just says that it was nothing and that he could take care of himself.

All of this may seem “harmless” enough and it has thus far been swept under the rug as it would seem and I must place emphasis on as it would seem. I know some people don’t pay as much attention to the first season as others but this little “loose thread” may not be so loose after all. Recall back to season three episode 11 “Reciprocity” that several shapeshifters turn up assassinated and when all is said and done, the assassin is none other than Peter Bishop.  It more or less was shrugged off as being caused by the machine changing him.  I’m presenting this as the reason, Nina tasked him to do so and this was the favor.

Interesting theory I had never thought about, but it makes sense seeing as many of the shapeshifters had a connection to Massive Dynamic if not all of them if I recall. She may have put him on such a task not only as this “favour” but just to clean out every mole out of the company. Good idea.

This is the season for revisiting the mysteries and secrets from season one. If Peter did track down, kill and dissect the shapeshifters at Nina’s request, it would explain several things. Most notable of these was Peter’s behavior.

But killing still seems out-of-character even for season one Peter – dodgy as he was – even if it was not people he was killing. And if this was the favor Nina called in, it seems all out of proportion to the favor she gave.

After all, Massive Dynamics stock jumped upon the arrest of the CEO of the rival company. And this was a direct result of the favor she did for Peter. So the favor she did for Peter, turned out to be as much (or more) for herself and her company than for Peter.

Yes, but Nina will take advantage of people if she has the opportunity to do so, and she had the opportunity to do so. Peter has always been violent; back in “The Dreamscape” (1.09), for example, he beats up a former girlfriend’s current boyfriend and tells the current boyfriend that if he hits her again, he will kill him, and I think that he meant that. He is Walternate’s son, after all; violence and cold-blooded calculation are in his blood; as we learn from the latest BEYOND THE FRINGE comic, Peter, himself, comes to terms with this and warns his younger self not to make the same mistakes that he did. I love Ray’s theory and am very much on board with it; I think that it is a very strong possibility.
