Riders On The Storm

The writers of Fringe seem to take so much care in the music, books, and other references that they add into the show.  My favorite this week was the classic Doors’ song, “Riders On The Storm.”  Withholding the obvious reference (the family in the scene was in fact “riding through a storm”), I think the lyrics of this song can be applied to the story of Fringe in several ways:

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm

“Into this world we’re thrown” can obviously be applied to Peter, who despite his newfound happiness with Olivia, still seems somewhat angry with Walter.  I was saddened that Peter and Walter did not exchange any words before Peter entered the machine, but simply that sad locking of eyes.

There’s a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin’ like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah

“There’s a killer on the road” could certainly apply to Walternate, especially that first glimpse Peter got of him on the bridge in “The Man From the Other Side.”

Girl ya gotta love your man
Girl ya gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends
Our life will never end
Gotta love your man, yeah

This verse reminds me of Peter and Olivia clasping hands and walking toward the machine to do what the universe demands of them.  “The world on you depends,” indeed.  But why didn’t Peter return Olivia’s “I love you?”

Great points! And as well, as many people surely know already, the accident that happened on the road was an event that happened to Jim Morrison. The following is a quote from good old Wiki:

In 1947, Morrison, then four years old, allegedly witnessed a car accident in the desert, where a family of American Indians were injured and possibly killed. He referred to this incident in a spoken word performance on the song “Dawn’s Highway” from the album An American Prayer, and again in the songs “Peace Frog” and “Ghost Song.”

Wow Fringe Nerd I was thinking the exact same thing. And I mean, THE EXACT SAME THING. Are you using Sam Weiss’ trans-dimensional window??? Great observations. The only thing I could add is from the line, “Sweet memory will die” as the themes of memory and dreams are oft repeated. Especially their manipulation. Judging from the trailer for the finale it seems as if no one recounts the past!

I’ve loved this song for a long time, I stopped thinking about it and just downloaded it Monday. Love The Doors, Jim and their lyrics.
Gotta get around to getting more of their Vinyls & CDs.

Yes I Said Vinyls in their kids! :X

    Thanks for that IHardy.

    Well done Inter-Dimensional Dave ☉

Inter-dimensional Dave – I just finished listening to the feedback podcast, and wow, I sure stepped all over your point with the last verse, didn’t I? I know I have no way to prove it, ha ha, but I’m never able to listen to the live podcasts on Sundays. Sunday is a busy day for my household, so I wait for the feed to come out on iTunes. But it looks like we had the same thought process, which is fun! Thanks for your comments, and you too Bad_Wobot & IHardy.
