Fringe Poll: What’s behind the Nina Injection?

Nov 20, 2011 | 25 comments

Why did Nina Sharp have Olivia injected?

A.  Because she’s a good “Mom” and she’s just trying to protect her!

B.  Because she’s an evil genius trying to enslave her!

C.  Stop asking these questions Dave I’m too crazy about that ending!

There’s no chance Nina had a good reason to do that. Olivia’s an adult. She has the right to decide if she wants any medical treatment and/or to be part of an experiment. There’s no possible justification for Nina’s behavior. During “Wallflower” this Nina revealed herself to be completely unethical. Everything Massive Dynamic did to Eugene was grossly unethical and in most countries would be illegal. Nina didn’t show any remorse or acknowledge what a terrible thing it was.

Based on what we saw at the end of the episode, my conclusion is that the only reason Nina took Olivia and Rachel into her home was so Massive Dynamic could study Olivia. In fact, I suspect Massive Dynamic, through its subsidiary, killed Olivia’s mother either by causing her illness or making sure she got “treatment” that hastened her death. With Nina’s knowledge, Massive Dynamic made Olivia and Rachel orphans precisely so Nina could take them in and thus give Massive Dynamic full-time, unfettered access to Olivia. I don’t know if Nina’s a genius but she certainly is evil.

Lemoneyes, I can’t disagree with anything you said. You made your argument so forcefully and passionately that I got a shiver just reading it. Hearing this, my thoughts go back to the episode, “Subject 9”. You may recall Nina gave what I refer to as her “War room speech”. In that speech Nina dismisses the consequences of Massive Dynamic’s creations. She rejects all responsibility for them but revels in holding the patents for them. It was cold, calculating and cruel. I think that was our first taste of the new evil Nina. If we find out that Nina was complicit in Olivia’s mothers death I may shiver again. Good reply Lemoneyes.

As you know Dave …. i am all for the argument that Nina is up to no good here. During the “Wallflower” ep she was just so contradictory. I mean, one minute she is saying that she doesnt recall anything about Eugene …and then in the very next breath she is telling Lincoln all about him! Having the resources of Massive Dynamic behind her i have no doubt that she played a part in Olivias mother death ….and i agree with lemoneyes on that. Who’s to say that she didnt have a hand in William Bell not being alive in this timeline either. Yes i know, im being a bit Peter Bishop and conspiracy theories here!

Of course there will be people who disagree …and thats ok. But if Nina has no hidden agenda then why is she treating her “surrogate” daughter so poorly. Shes ok with Olivia having massive migraines ….. and memory loss! Although i think, to be fair to Nina, Olivia doesnt know she has memory loss! haha! Nina is having Olivia injected with cortexifan without her knowledge …and if this is all in the name of helping Olivia, then why didnt she tell her? Why knock her out with one drug and then inject her with another? What kind of “mother” does that to a child?

The one thing i love about the character of Nina is that we still dont know which side she is on … or what her agenda is. And thats awesome that Joel and Jeff have been able to keep Ninas character ambiguous! They have kept us guessing … and we are in season 4!

“What kind of mother does that to a child?” I was all set to play the devil’s advocate for Nina but after hearing that question I’m left, she’s left, defenseless. The only thing I can think of is that Nina is harnessing the ultimate weapon in Olivia and keeping that truth from Liv is her only defense.

See my “war room” reference to lemoneyes above. Maybe Nina has no defense. Thanks for the reply runpaceyrun, good thoughts.

A fake out may be taking place here. Her motives may still be sincere but, like Walter, Nina may believe that because of an upcoming crisis – this may be Bell’s legacy she is carrying out – that the ends justify the means.

It may be revealed that Nina is ‘leveling up’ Olivia to face an upcoming crisis.

So my Fringe therapist makes a house call eh? Much obliged. (And the check is in the mail!) You strike me as a man that is willing to make a wager or two. Would you bet the future on Nina? I made a suggestion to runpaceyrun above that Nina may be keeping the horrible truth from Olivia that she is the ultimate weapon. Sound plausible to you Doc?

        Sounds most plausible indeed.

I think the injections are to help erase the memories of the Red Sox collapse in September. The migraines are the memories bleeding through.

Oh, good one KennyC. The Sox have won two world series since and visions of the ’86 collapse are still bleeding through for me!!!! Do you think Nina has a spare needle?

I rather like what Old Darth says… I’m pretty sure Nina’s motives are sincere in her own eyes, but are not in Olivia’s best interests.

    “C” was a rather tempting answer too… 🙂

Ha, “C” comes in handy once in a while. If OD’s thoughts are true and couple them with my “ultimate weapon” theory you guys may have a good point. I still can’t shake Nina’s war room speech from “Subject 9”. She was so dis-compassionate. What if she is disabling Olivia to pave the way for a Red universe invasion led by the new Shape-shifters? Bad right?

Yup, that would be bad. I have no idea what Nina’s true motives are, but I have a feeling the “greater good” argument might be coming into play. And that is actually an interesting – if often repeated – question. When IS the “greater good” the morally right one to take? Can it even really be answered? It is often the “point of view” that makes one decision look better than the other…

The “greater good” argument is starting to gain more traction. But maybe Nina should let Liv in on the secret.

We’ve had 21 votes so far and “Evil Nina” is leading by a whopping 86% to 14%. Come on Nina supporters don’t leave your girl out in the cold, she needs your help! (Or does she?!!!) (Insert evil music here.)

Maybe it’s the Nina from the other side, I was maybe thinking its to stop Olivia remembering about deleted Peter, maybe Nina knows everything. Very interesting way to end the year. I liked the idea of evil Nina

Nice twist on the concept of evil Nina, “from the other side”. That would be fun to see play out. I wonder who is pulling her strings if anyone. Thanks for the reply Shano.

The one thing I know about all JJ Abrams series is that no one is ever pure evil. Somehow he always comes back and drums up some kind of sympathy for even the blackest villian and often its a mommy or daddy figure. She looks dead evil right now but somehow there will be a loophole creating a grey area…..always is and way fun to see how the story unfolds.

Love Blair Brown’s Nina — she rocks, good or bad.

OK, good to know wilma. I hope I don’t lose any street cred over this but I never watched “Alias”. It will be good to keep your observation in mind. Blair Brown is something isn’t she? She was in one episode of “Falling Skies” last season and she crushed it! Thanks for the reply!

Well it was fun while it lsated. Even though there aren’t going to be any more books in the series, I think I’ll buy it so I can keep reliving the magic.

I vote 100% Nina is evil.
what great writing to make Nina be bad, and if she wanted to help anyone she would have told olive about it.
So by default Nina is evil.
I am very sad Olive missed her date with Lincoln.
    Great post IDD!

Sorry about the late reply Charlie! It doesn’t look good for Nina does it? She has been getting some support and there are some plausible theories circulating that she does what she does for the greater good. But I don’t know, she was a cipher before this latest version but now I feel as though she’s changed due to the new timeline. Always good to hear from you and thanks for the reply.

Maybe Nina is trying to help Peter to go back, and she thinks that Olivia can help him. Semmed to me that this was the first time, at least for a while. (Sorry for my english)

Hello HaroldSaxon, thanks for joining the discussion. I’d love it if Nina and or Walternate had some insight into Peter’s predicament. That would put a whole new spin on things. Why the secrecy though? Is there something else afoot? I hope so!
