Confused? This blog post may probably confuse you more. Mind you that this is my personal opinion, and anyone is free to disprove me but for now, this is the best way I understand Fringe… because seriously, all of us are going nuts.
If you haven’t figured out, scientists love visual presentations, hence, the complicated diagram.
Let’s get cracking.
Every line (in different color) in the figure is a (possible) universe. We agree that there are two universes – the blueverse and the redverse, which is colored blue and red lines, respectively.
We don’t know what prompted the split of the two universes. Do we even know if there is even a split at all? Anyway, that’s not the point of this post. Let’s just assume that they are there (ala big bang) with no apparent reason.
The purple line represents the supposedly when the First People rule the world prior to the existence of the dinosaurs. I put misinterpretation in there because we all know now that the First People is Walter (or should I say are the future people?!). I’ll deal with this in another blog post. We also know from the Fringe comics, that Hitler was sent to the dinosaur days (and yes, that’s one of the answers in the Fringe bootcamp competition). The purple line is a ‘universe of its own’. We are not sure yet if the comics actually in the same reality is the television. The “true” First People could still be true, so I’m also dumping that to this universe. But again, for non-confusion, this is under the blueverse universe (hence the overlap), and was misinterpreted by the fifth Sam Weiss.
Then we have the consciousness jump of Peter. From the blueverse timeline into the green timeline of May 2026. Did “current” Peter inhabit “future” Peter’s consciousness? Hm. Anyhow, I’m calling this as a “glimpse” into the future. I’m placing this as a NEW alternate universe, because I think this is just an option to the many future possibilities. But I won’t discount the fact that “this universe” could overlap with the blueverse and redverse universes (of our current timeline).
Prior to the May 2026, we know that Walter opened a wormhole and sent back the machine through time… which we can be a bit confident that this was sent back years before the first Sam Weiss uncovered the manuscript. Anyway, this green line joins into the blueverse where the machine was sent. Okay. We don’t know if Walter sent both machines to the past. If he did sent two machines, then one of them could be in the redverse.
Walter recalls this event in the May 2026 flashforward. So, we can safely assume that this is within this “green timeline/universe”. But it is also safe to say that this may be in a different universe (because a universe could have branched out to lead to a different event?! Or overlaps?!).
Going over to the orange line. This is now going to be Xerophytes’ craziness. I think there is another universe that we didn’t get to see. One is that there is a possibility that Walternate sent back his machine to his redverse. And therefore, he was able to quickly assemble the device easily (and without any confusion). Remember that our Walter was blabbering throughout this season on how much the Bell’s brain surgery affects his memory? That could have contributed for him not remembering what he did in the future (WHAT? I know, I am not making sense anymore). Well, just think about the time as circular and not as linear. Fold the two ends of the paper and thus making it not look like flat (was this illustrated in White Tulip?). Anyway, so yes, that’s what I think happened. And knowing Walternate = Walter (almost), I can assume he sent the machine through time in a wormhole in Central Park.
And therefore, this is the timeline where Walternate knew that Peter is the key to saving his redverse. And to the demise of the blueverse.
Then we are introduced to another timeline/universe. The yellow line (how fitting?!), where Peter is not existing. This timeline overlaps with the blueverse and redverse (since it was that time when Peter vanished) and again, the events prior to the yellow line can be different to the timeline of the blueverse and redverse, that is why I am placing this to a different universe.
And then you also have another universe/timeline – and probably close to the Peter’s inexistence is that both Peters died. Remember that Walter and Bell were trying to poke holes to the fabric of the universe even before the abduction… therefore, it still stands relevant as to how the two universes collide at the end and leads into the scene seconds after Peter vanished.
I know how my post can be more confusing. But think of this, a universe can overlap (or merge?!) and branch out.
Fire away your comments.
Congratulations, now get these plans to Massive Dynamic. Well done, not sure if I fully agree with everything but I love your artwork.
It is hard to comment with so much to ponder. Not sure it matters, but thought Walter sent the machine back post May 2026 after deducing he would be doing this. Walternate doing this also is intriguing. One of my questions is did both Walters build the machine from scratch in the future? Or is the same machine looped through time (like Richard’s compass in Lost)?
I think this whole thing is why ‘Time Paradox’ appears in the title sequence.
Also, since reverse didn’t exist anymore in the future…. is it possible that the device would have gone from green timeline to both the Blueverse and Redverses? As something that was quantum entangled through bilocation?…..
Also, Lasers?
I wonder if it went back to one universe and their timelines diverged shortly after….
I forgot what law or theory is that… but it suggests that it is easier to destroy than to build… ergo, it is easier to make a branch of universe rather than to merge it. Because merging two universes create many errors or nuisances or problems or questions.
I ment redvers, but typed reverse…
