Fringe Matrix of Universes and Timelines

Oct 19, 2011 | 12 comments

Here is the diagram we received from Meg in PA that we mentioned in Episode 408 & Episode 409. Here’s what Meg had to say about the diagram.

Note on Colors:
The opening titles in the new timeline are orange.  However, both the formerly-red and the formerly-blue universes are shown in the new timeline during these “orange title” episodes.  Obviously, both the former redverse and the former blueverse cannot both be the new orangeverse.  Even though there is a bridge, they are still two distinct universes, a point that I am afraid has been lost in some of the fan discussion.

To demonstrate the distinction between the two universes in the new timeline, I have arbitrarily classified the old redverse as the new greenverse.   I have classified the new blueverse as the orangeverse.  Why?  Peter’s alteration of the timeline has diluted the original colors and added a layer of complexity—much like taking a can of primary-color paint and stirring in another color to create a secondary color.

I’m not sure this works perfectly, this is just my working theory, and the colors can be adjusted above when we get additional information.  Constructive comments will be appreciated!

What do you think?  Does Meg’s diagram make sense?

I love it! It’s the simplest explanation for those who are still confused. And, It does line up perfectly with what was just confirmed; that the universes are the same, but the timeline is altered.

I know this conforms to the crazy-color-coded diagrams from previous posts, but I think I might’ve left the blue and red colors there for both universes and both timelines, and just referred to the timelines as “Original Timeline” and “Orange Timeline” since we know the blue and red universes are still the same, and the orange opening denotes the altered timeline and not an orange universe.

    Anywho, AWESOME JOB Meg!

Keep in mind we’ve had previous time travel within the Blue labeled universe.

As someone who spent the summer watching the first 3 seasons, then discovered The Fringe Podcast, and has been loving both – this is wonderful! Meg, your diagram is great.

I’m really enjoying season 4, and also having TFP as a weekly addition to the show – it’s like having a great meal once a week, and then having someone deliver a little bit of takeout a couple more times through the week! That’s possibly the worst analogy ever… but I’m sticking with it. 🙂

Keep up the great work everyone!

Great diagram, Meg. There are “holes” in the fabric of space between the Blue-verse and the Orange-verse, right?? Peter squished through…..

    Love the diagram!
What software did you use to create the picture?
Very clear and simple to understand.
    Nice!!!!!!

Thanks for all the positive feedback!
T Gruber: I agree, it may be better to go with “original timeline” and “orange timeline” and keep the red/blue colors. Hadn’t thought of that, but it makes sense. Conceptualizing the timeline as orange (rather than the universe) also lessens my annoyance with the show for feeding into the universe vs. timeline confusion by only using orange titles this season despite showing both universes. We are now seeing the original red and blue universes through an “orange tint.”
Charlie: This was created in Word….hence the clumsy misaligned arrows and such 🙂 I did the best I could without trying to use a fancier program.
Dave and Lij, I will have to follow up and read your theories…can’t at the moment cause dinner bell just rang, but I look forward to considering what I’m sure are some things I haven’t thought of as my feeble mind has tried to sort this out!

You are forgetting one thing in the Redverse… Because Redverse Peter didn’t die and actually lived in the blue universe, as a child Olivia appeared to Walternate and told him where Peter was. The fact that another universe took Peter is part of what drove Walternate mad.

First things first…I absolutely love this podcast and look forward to both editions weekly. They have really enhanced my enjoyment of the show and presented possibilities that never would have occurred to me.
The following is one of those possibilities.

I absolutely love the graph above that Meg created. Its simple, eloquent and lays everything out very simply.

I think that there is another level we must add to the graph. Before the “Old Timeline” and the “New Timeline” I beleve there has to be an ORIGINAL timeline.

ORIGINAL TIMELINE (BLUEVERSE) – Peter Bishop dies from disease. Elizabeth Bishop is devastated, divorces Walter.

    ORIGINAL TIMELINE (ALTVERSE) –

sorry. Hit wrong button. To continue…

ORIGINAL TIMELINE ( ALTVERSE) – Walter Bishop is succesful in finding a cure for his son’s disease. Peter Bishop LIVES and grows up in the alternate universe.
Peter as an adult meets Altlivia, they fall in love and they have a child ( Henry).

Some time in the future the observers plan to go back in time to observe signifigant events. As September watches Walternate mix the cure, Walternate is distracted and NEVER finds the cure.

This is why the universes are screwed up. Peter never should have met and fallen in love with “our” Olivia.

I also believe that September thought that “our” Walter WOULD return Peter to his rightful home after he cured him. He did not anticipate that Walter would love an alternate Peter as his own. If Walter had returned Peter then the original timeline would have survived although with a slight hiccup.

Please let me now if any of this makes sense and in the meantime…”Keep on Fringing”
